Belur and Halebidu
Belur and Halebidu are two important towns in present-day Karnataka, famous for the grand stone temples built by the Hoysala rulers in the 12th–13th centuries.
- Why they matter: These temple towns show the wealth, skill, and artistic taste of the Hoysalas, and they help historians understand how powerful this southern kingdom was in its time.
- What is special about the temples: Hoysala temples are known for intricate carvings—detailed sculptures of gods and goddesses, dancers, musicians, animals, and scenes from epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
- Belur: Best known for the Chennakesava Temple, dedicated to Vishnu. It is often linked with Hoysala pride and celebration of royal power through art and architecture.
- Halebidu: Famous for the Hoysaleswara Temple, dedicated to Shiva. “Halebidu” literally means “old city”, because it was once a major capital area that later declined.
- Architecture you can picture: Many Hoysala temples stand on a raised platform and have star-like or many-cornered bases, making the building look different from simpler square-shaped temples.
- A useful clue about history: Even when kingdoms faced wars and invasions, the temples at Belur and Halebidu remained lasting evidence of the Hoysalas’ cultural achievements and their place in south Indian history.
