Non-renewable resources are natural resources that take a very long time to form and get used up much faster than nature can replace them.
- Why they are “non-renewable”: many are formed through slow geological processes (deep underground) over millions of years, so once a deposit is exhausted, it will not return within a human lifetime.
- Common types:
- Fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, and natural gas (used for electricity, transport, and industry).
- Minerals and metals like iron, copper, and gold (used in buildings, machines, wires, phones, and tools).
- A concrete example: coal mined from areas such as Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh powers many thermal power plants; when coal is burned, it cannot be “made again” quickly, and the mine eventually runs out.
- Why they matter for society and the economy: modern life depends on them—power supply, jobs, transport, and manufacturing—so shortages can raise prices and affect development.
- Environmental impact: burning fossil fuels releases smoke and gases like carbon dioxide, which contributes to air pollution and climate change; mining can also damage land and water if not managed carefully.
- What “judicious use” looks like: saving energy, improving efficiency (like better public transport and efficient appliances), recycling metals, and shifting towards sustainable alternatives such as solar and wind power.
Understanding non-renewable resources helps explain why countries plan carefully for energy security and why conservation and alternative energy are so important.
