biofuel

Biofuel is a fuel made from living or once-living materials (biomass), such as plants, algae, or animal waste, instead of from petroleum (fossil fuels).

  • How microalgae can become biofuel: many microalgae store energy as oils (fats). These oils can be extracted and processed into fuels like biodiesel.
  • Why it matters: biofuels can be renewable because the organisms (like algae) can be grown again and again, unlike fossil fuels that take millions of years to form.
  • A simple way to picture it: think of algae as tiny “oil factories” floating in water—grow them, collect them, and convert their stored oil into fuel.
  • Common examples of biofuels: ethanol (often made from sugarcane or corn) and biodiesel (made from plant oils or algal oils).
  • One useful advantage of algae-based biofuel: algae can grow in ponds or tanks and may not need fertile farmland, so it can reduce competition with food crops in some cases.
