Cheek cells
Cheek cells are the thin, flat cells that form the inner lining of your mouth (the inside of your cheeks).
- Shape: They are like tiny, flat “tiles” or “plates.” This flat shape helps them fit closely together.
- Job: They make a smooth protective covering that shields the tissues underneath from rubbing and minor injuries while you chew and speak.
- How they work as a layer: Many cheek cells join side-by-side to form a continuous sheet, so there are fewer gaps for germs and dirt to enter.
- Everyday example: If you accidentally bite your cheek, the surface may hurt, but it usually heals quickly because these lining cells can be replaced often.
- Interesting point: Cheek cells are one of the easiest animal cells to observe under a microscope—gently scraping the inside of the cheek gives a sample of these flat cells.
Cheek cells show clearly how a cell’s shape is linked to its function: flat cells are excellent for making protective linings.
