Heating effect of electric current is the production of heat when electric charges move through a material that resists their flow.

  • Inside a wire, moving electrons repeatedly collide with the atoms of the material. These collisions make the atoms vibrate faster, and this increased vibration is felt as heat.
  • Think of it like cycling through a crowded path: the more obstacles you bump into, the more effort is needed. In the same way, a wire with greater resistance turns more electrical energy into heat.
  • Nichrome is commonly used for heating elements because it has high resistance, can become very hot without melting easily, and does not burn away quickly in air.
  • The effect can be useful when heat is wanted, such as in an iron or toaster. In ordinary connecting wires, however, too much heating wastes energy and can damage insulation, so such wires are usually made of low-resistance copper.

Thus, electrical energy does not disappear in a hot wire—it is changed into heat energy.
