pseudopodia

Pseudopodia are temporary, finger-like extensions of a cell’s body that help some single-celled organisms (like Amoeba) move and catch food.

  • Meaning: The word comes from “pseudo” (false) + “podia” (feet), so they are like “false feet”.
  • How they form: The cell’s jelly-like cytoplasm flows outward in one direction, making a bulge that becomes a pseudopodium.
  • Movement: The organism pushes a pseudopodium forward, then the rest of the cell flows into it—like squeezing a soft gel so it slowly creeps ahead.
  • Feeding: Pseudopodia can surround a tiny food particle and pull it inside the cell, forming a small food vacuole where digestion happens.
  • Key feature: Pseudopodia are not permanent body parts; they appear and disappear as needed, which is why Amoeba keeps changing shape.

So, pseudopodia act like a flexible “tool” that lets an Amoeba both travel and eat, even though it has no legs or mouth.
