Unani

Unani is a traditional system of medicine that uses natural remedies and a whole-body approach to help prevent illness and support recovery.

  • Where it came from: Unani developed from ancient Greek medical ideas and later grew in West Asia and India. In India, it is a recognised traditional medical system.
  • Main idea: Health is linked to balance inside the body. Unani practitioners focus on keeping the body’s functions in balance rather than only treating one symptom.
  • How treatment is done: It commonly uses herbs, oils, and sometimes minerals, along with advice on diet, daily routine, and lifestyle.
  • Example: For a minor problem like indigestion, a Unani practitioner may suggest specific foods to avoid, a simple herbal preparation, and changes in routine (like sleep and activity) to help the body recover.
  • Why it matters: It can be helpful for everyday wellness and some conditions, especially when used early and with proper guidance.
  • A useful nuance: Like other traditional systems, Unani may not work for all diseases or all stages of illness, so serious infections or emergencies usually need timely modern medical care too.

Think of Unani as a health approach that tries to strengthen the body and restore balance, not just “fight” a disease.
