biogas
Biogas is a fuel gas made when certain microorganisms break down plant and animal waste in places where there is no oxygen (an “oxygen-free” or anaerobic condition).
- What it contains: Biogas is mainly methane (the part that burns well) and carbon dioxide, with tiny amounts of other gases.
- How it is formed: Special bacteria (often called anaerobic bacteria) digest waste like dung, kitchen scraps, or crop residues. While feeding, they release gases—this collected gas is biogas.
- Why methane matters: Methane is a high-energy gas, so biogas can be used for cooking, heating, and even generating electricity.
- Where it is made: In a biogas plant (also called a digester), waste is mixed with water and kept in a closed tank so oxygen cannot enter. The gas is stored and piped out for use.
- Extra useful product: The leftover semi-solid slurry is rich in nutrients and can be used as manure for fields and gardens.
- Eco-friendly angle: It turns waste into energy, reduces the need for firewood and fossil fuels, and helps manage waste more cleanly.
