decomposition
Decomposition is the natural process in which dead plants, animals, and organic waste are broken down into simpler substances.
- Who does it? Mostly microorganisms like bacteria and fungi (and also small creatures like earthworms) act as decomposers.
- What happens during it? Complex materials in waste (like peels, leaves, or dung) are changed into simpler nutrients, along with water and gases. The remaining dark, crumbly material becomes humus/manure.
- Why it matters: It returns nutrients such as nitrogen and minerals back to the soil, so plants can use them again. That’s why decomposition is called nature’s recycling system.
- Conditions that affect it: Decomposition happens faster when there is enough moisture, a suitable warm temperature, and air (for many decomposers). If it’s too dry, too cold, or too wet, it slows down.
- In oxygen-free places: Some microbes decompose waste without oxygen and produce biogas (mainly methane and carbon dioxide), which can be used as a fuel.
- Easy example: A compost pit is like a “microbe kitchen” where peels and leaves are slowly “cooked” into nutrient-rich manure for plants.
Without decomposition, dead matter would pile up, and the soil would gradually lose the nutrients needed for new life to grow.
