Biotechnology

Biotechnology is the use of living organisms (or their cells and useful parts) to make products and solve problems for humans.

  • How it works: Scientists use microbes (like bacteria or yeast), plant/animal cells, or biological molecules (like enzymes) to produce something helpful—often in a controlled lab or factory setting.
  • Why it matters in health: Biotechnology helps create vaccines, medicines, and diagnostic tests by studying germs and training the body’s immune system safely.
  • Vaccine connection: Some modern vaccines are made using biotech methods—for example, by making a harmless piece of a germ in the lab, or by using genetic instructions (like mRNA) so our cells briefly make a harmless germ-part that the immune system learns to recognise.
  • Everyday analogy: Think of a cell as a tiny “factory.” Biotechnology is like giving that factory the right tools and instructions to make a useful product—such as a vaccine component—without making you sick.
  • More than vaccines: Biotechnology is also used to make antibiotics, insulin for diabetes, and even to improve crops and food products.

In short, biotechnology turns knowledge about life into practical solutions—especially powerful in preventing diseases and protecting communities.
