vaccines

Vaccines are medicines that safely train your immune system to recognise and fight a particular germ (pathogen) before you ever meet the real infection.

  • How they work: A vaccine shows your body a “practice version” of the germ (or a small harmless part of it). Your immune system responds by making antibodies and creating memory cells that remember that germ.
  • Why memory matters: If the real germ enters later, those memory cells help your body react faster and stronger, often stopping the disease or making it much milder.
  • Different kinds of vaccines: Some use weakened germs, some use killed germs, some use only a piece of the germ (like a protein), and some give instructions so your cells briefly make a harmless piece that the immune system can learn to recognise.
  • Boosters: Some vaccines need extra doses later (called booster shots) to remind the immune system and keep protection strong for a longer time.
  • Preventive, not curative: Vaccines are meant to prevent disease; they don’t usually cure you once the infection has already started.
  • Community protection: When many people are vaccinated, germs find it harder to spread, which helps protect people who are too young or too ill to be vaccinated.

Think of a vaccine like a fire drill: you practise safely so you can respond quickly and correctly in a real emergency.
