A vacuole is a membrane-covered, fluid-filled “storage space” inside a cell.
- In plant cells, the vacuole is usually large and central, so it takes up a big part of the cell’s interior.
- It stores useful materials like water, sugars, salts, and sometimes pigments (which can help give colour to petals and fruits).
- It also acts like a cell’s “dustbin and store room” together by keeping waste substances and extra chemicals safely away from the rest of the cytoplasm.
- A key job is providing support: when the vacuole is full of water, it creates pressure that keeps the plant cell firm (this is why fresh leaves feel crisp).
- When a plant doesn’t get enough water, the vacuole shrinks, the cell loses firmness, and the plant may wilt.
- In animal cells, vacuoles are usually small and may be temporary, because animal cells don’t need the same water-pressure support that plant cells do.
So, the vacuole helps a cell stay organised by storing materials, isolating wastes, and (in plants) keeping the cell strong and well-shaped.
