Bacterial cells

Bacterial cells are the cells that make up bacteria—tiny, single-celled organisms.

  • No true nucleus: Unlike plant and animal cells, bacterial cells do not have a well-defined nucleus with a nuclear membrane. Their DNA lies in a region called the nucleoid.
  • Simple (prokaryotic) design: Because they lack a nucleus and some other membrane-bound parts, bacterial cells are called prokaryotic cells. This “simpler” structure still lets them do all life processes on their own.
  • Cell wall for support: Most bacterial cells have a cell wall outside the cell membrane. It helps them keep their shape and protects them, especially in tough conditions.
  • Very small but very active: They are much smaller than most plant and animal cells, yet they can grow and reproduce quickly by splitting into two (a process called binary fission).
  • Real-life connection: Some bacterial cells are helpful (like Lactobacillus in curd formation and Rhizobium in nitrogen fixation), while others can cause diseases—so understanding their cell structure matters in health, farming, and food.

Even without a nucleus, a single bacterial cell can carry out all the basic functions of life—showing why a cell is truly the basic unit of life.
