electron microscopes

Electron microscopes are powerful microscopes that use a beam of electrons (instead of light) to see extremely tiny details inside and on the surface of cells.

  • Why they can magnify so much: Electrons have a much shorter “wavelength” than visible light, so they can show much finer details—like using a sharper pencil to draw a more detailed picture.
  • What they help scientists see: Very small cell structures such as parts of organelles, membranes, and even tiny particles that a light microscope cannot resolve clearly.
  • Two common types:
    • TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope): Electrons pass through a very thin slice of the sample to show internal details.
    • SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope): Electrons scan the surface to show a detailed, 3D-like view of the outside.
  • Important limitation: Most electron microscopes need samples in a vacuum and special preparation, so they usually cannot show living cells in their natural state.
  • Why they matter in cell study: They reveal “hidden” structures that explain how cells work—like seeing the tiny machinery inside a factory rather than only the building from outside.
