Multicellular organisms
Multicellular organisms are living things made of many cells that work together to keep the organism alive.
- In multicellular organisms, cells are usually specialised—different cells do different jobs (like muscle cells for movement, nerve cells for messages, and blood cells for transport).
- Specialised cells often form tissues (a group of similar cells), tissues form organs (like heart or leaf), and organs work together in organ systems.
- This division of labour makes the organism more efficient—just like in a school where different people have different roles (teachers teach, the nurse helps with health, the librarian manages books).
- Because many cells depend on one another, multicellular organisms need coordination (for example, signals in animals through nerves and hormones, and in plants through chemical signals).
- Being multicellular usually allows organisms to grow larger and develop complex body structures, but it also means most cells cannot survive for long if separated from the body.
So, multicellular life is all about teamwork among cells—each cell has a role, and together they make one functioning organism.
