microscope
A microscope is an instrument that makes very small objects look much bigger so we can see their details clearly.
- It works using one or more lenses (curved pieces of glass) that bend light to form a magnified image—like a powerful, carefully designed magnifying glass.
- The big idea is not just “making things look larger,” but helping us see structures we cannot see with our eyes—such as the tiny compartments in cork (cells) or tiny living organisms in water.
- A microscope usually has two important jobs:
- Magnification: making the image bigger.
- Resolution: showing two close points as separate, so the image looks sharp and detailed (not just big and blurry).
- Compound microscopes (common in school labs) use more than one lens—an objective lens near the specimen and an eyepiece near your eye—to increase magnification.
- A simple way to relate: if you try to read very tiny print, your eye can’t focus enough to see the letters clearly; a microscope “helps your eye” by forming a larger, clearer image of the tiny object.
- Microscopes opened up the study of cells and microorganisms, which is why they are such an important tool in biology and medicine.
